Why Methodology Matters

When you read a product review on Creatine.my, you deserve to know exactly how we arrived at our scores and recommendations. The supplement industry is flooded with biased reviews, paid endorsements, and superficial rankings that tell you very little about actual product quality. We take a fundamentally different approach.

Our review methodology was designed from the ground up to be transparent, repeatable, and fair. Every creatine product we evaluate goes through the same standardised process, scored across eight distinct categories on a consistent 1-to-10 scale. This means you can compare any two products on our site with confidence that they were measured by the same yardstick.

We developed this methodology by studying how independent testing laboratories, consumer advocacy organisations, and peer-reviewed journals evaluate supplements. We then adapted these principles specifically for the Malaysian market, accounting for local pricing, availability, halal certification, and consumer preferences.

Our Eight Evaluation Categories

Every creatine product reviewed on Creatine.my is scored across eight categories. Each category receives an individual score from 1 to 10, and these scores are combined into a weighted overall rating. Here is what each category measures and why it matters.

1. Purity (Weight: 20%)

Purity is the single most important factor in a creatine supplement. We assess the grade of creatine used (Creapure or equivalent pharmaceutical-grade versus generic), the presence or absence of fillers and unnecessary additives, heavy metal testing results where available, and whether the product meets its label claims for creatine content per serving. Products using Creapure-certified creatine monohydrate start with a significant advantage because Creapure is manufactured under strict pharmaceutical conditions in Germany with guaranteed purity above 99.95 percent.

2. Value (Weight: 15%)

Value measures the cost-effectiveness of the product for Malaysian consumers. We calculate the cost per gram of actual creatine (not per serving, since serving sizes vary), compare against the current Malaysian market average, and factor in the number of servings per container. A higher-priced product can still score well on value if it delivers superior purity and third-party testing, but we ensure that every ringgit spent delivers measurable benefit.

3. Effectiveness (Weight: 20%)

Effectiveness evaluates the form of creatine used and the scientific evidence supporting it. Creatine monohydrate has the strongest evidence base, so products using this form score highest. We also consider dosage accuracy, whether the recommended serving delivers the clinically studied dose of 3 to 5 grams, and whether the formulation includes any ingredients that may enhance or hinder absorption. Products making unsupported claims about novel creatine forms without adequate research backing receive lower scores in this category.

4. Taste and Palatability (Weight: 5%)

For unflavoured creatine monohydrate, this category assesses how well the product dissolves and whether it introduces any off-flavours or grittiness. For flavoured products, we evaluate taste quality, sweetness balance, and whether artificial flavours or sweeteners are used. While taste is subjective, we use a panel of at least three testers and average their scores to reduce individual bias. Pure, unflavoured creatine monohydrate that dissolves cleanly typically scores highest in this category.

5. Mixability (Weight: 5%)

Creatine monohydrate is notoriously difficult to dissolve fully in cold water. We test each product by mixing the recommended serving in 250 millilitres of room-temperature water using a spoon (not a blender) and observing how quickly and completely it dissolves. We note any clumping, sediment, or residue. Micronised creatine products generally outperform standard-grind alternatives. This category also considers whether the product mixes well into shakes and other beverages.

6. Third-Party Testing (Weight: 15%)

Independent verification is a cornerstone of supplement quality assurance. We check whether the product has been tested by recognised third-party laboratories such as Informed Sport, NSF Certified for Sport, USP Verified, or equivalent bodies. We also evaluate whether the brand publishes Certificates of Analysis (COAs) and whether those COAs are current and verifiable. Products with no third-party testing receive a score of 3 or below in this category regardless of other qualities, because without independent verification, label claims cannot be confirmed.

7. Brand Reputation (Weight: 10%)

Brand reputation is assessed through a combination of factors: the company's track record in the supplement industry, history of regulatory compliance, transparency about manufacturing processes and sourcing, customer service quality, and presence in the Malaysian market. We also consider whether the brand has ever been involved in product recalls, regulatory warnings, or failed third-party audits. Established brands with long track records of quality and transparency score higher than newcomers with no verifiable history.

8. Overall Experience (Weight: 10%)

The overall experience score captures factors that do not fit neatly into the other categories. This includes packaging quality, ease of use (scoop accuracy, resealable packaging, clear labelling), availability in Malaysian retail channels and online stores, shipping and delivery experience, and any unique features that enhance the consumer experience. This category also considers halal certification status, which is particularly important for the Malaysian market.

Scoring Scale

All scores use a 1-to-10 scale with the following benchmarks:

  • 9 to 10 — Exceptional: Best-in-class performance. Meets or exceeds every reasonable expectation. Reserved for products that genuinely stand out in a category.
  • 7 to 8 — Very Good: Above average performance with minor areas for improvement. Most quality creatine products fall in this range.
  • 5 to 6 — Average: Acceptable but unremarkable. Meets basic standards without distinguishing itself from competitors.
  • 3 to 4 — Below Average: Notable deficiencies that affect the overall product experience. May still be functional but is outperformed by most alternatives.
  • 1 to 2 — Poor: Significant quality or safety concerns. Not recommended for purchase. Reserved for products that fail to meet basic standards.

The final overall score is a weighted average of all eight category scores, rounded to one decimal place. Category weights reflect the relative importance of each factor for consumer decision-making, with purity and effectiveness weighted most heavily because they directly affect whether the product delivers on its core promise.

Our Testing Process

Every product review on Creatine.my follows a structured process that takes approximately two to three weeks from start to publication:

  1. Procurement: We purchase products through normal retail channels in Malaysia, including Shopee, Lazada, pharmacies, and specialty supplement stores. We never accept free samples from brands, because products sent for review may differ from what consumers actually receive.
  2. Verification: We verify the product's authenticity, check batch numbers, confirm halal certification where claimed, and photograph the packaging, label, and contents for documentation.
  3. Label Analysis: Our team reviews the supplement facts panel, ingredient list, and all label claims. We compare the stated creatine content per serving against industry standards and check for unnecessary fillers, artificial additives, or proprietary blends that obscure actual ingredient quantities.
  4. Practical Testing: We conduct mixability and taste tests using our standardised protocol. At least three team members independently evaluate the product, and their scores are averaged.
  5. Research Review: We research the brand's reputation, manufacturing practices, third-party testing status, and regulatory history. We verify any certifications claimed on the label.
  6. Scoring and Writing: Based on all collected data, we assign scores in each of the eight categories and draft the review. A second editor reviews the scores and text for accuracy and fairness before publication.
  7. Publication and Updates: The completed review is published with all scores, reasoning, and documentation. We revisit reviews at least every six months to check for formula changes, price updates, or new testing data.

How Comparisons Work

Our comparison articles place two or more products side by side across all eight evaluation categories. Rather than simply declaring a winner, we explain which product is better suited for different use cases, budgets, and preferences. A budget-conscious student may prioritise value, while a competitive athlete may prioritise purity and third-party testing.

Comparison articles always use the same scores from our individual product reviews. We never adjust scores for comparison purposes. If a product scored 7.5 for purity in its standalone review, it carries that same 7.5 into every comparison article. This ensures consistency and prevents any manipulation of results.

We also include a quick-reference summary table at the top of each comparison, showing category scores side by side so readers can identify differences at a glance before reading the detailed analysis.

Affiliate Relationships and Editorial Independence

Creatine.my participates in affiliate programmes with select retailers. When you click a product link and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. This revenue helps fund our operations, including product purchases for testing.

Critically, affiliate relationships never influence our scores, rankings, or recommendations. Products are scored identically whether or not we have an affiliate relationship with the retailer. If a product scores poorly, we publish that score honestly. We have declined affiliate partnerships with brands that requested editorial influence as a condition, and we will continue to do so.

Every page on Creatine.my that contains affiliate links includes a clear disclosure notice at the top of the page, in compliance with Malaysian consumer protection standards and international best practices.

Continuous Improvement

Our methodology is not static. We regularly review and refine our evaluation criteria based on advances in supplement testing technology, changes in the Malaysian market, reader feedback, and new research on creatine quality assessment. When we make changes to our methodology, we note those changes publicly and re-evaluate previously reviewed products under the updated criteria where the changes are significant.

If you have questions about our methodology or suggestions for improvement, please contact us at hello@creatine.my. We value transparency and welcome scrutiny of our process.
