Certified halal by Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM), the official Malaysian halal authority. Highest level of assurance for Malaysian Muslims.
Manufactured by AlzChem in Germany using Creapure process. Holds independent Halal and Kosher certifications. Pharmaceutical-grade synthetic creatine.
Produced through chemical synthesis with no animal-derived ingredients. Generally considered permissible but lacks formal halal certification.
Halal status has not been independently verified. May still be halal but no certification documentation is publicly available.
Understanding Halal Certification for Supplements
For Malaysia's Muslim-majority population, halal compliance is a fundamental requirement when choosing supplements. Unlike food products where halal logos are commonplace, the supplement industry presents unique challenges. Many creatine products are imported and may lack clear halal documentation, leaving consumers uncertain about their permissibility.
Creatine monohydrate has a relatively straightforward halal story compared to many other supplements. The vast majority of creatine produced globally is synthesized chemically from sarcosine and cyanamide — two non-animal chemical precursors. This means most creatine is halal by default in terms of raw ingredients. However, the manufacturing environment, cross-contamination risks, and processing aids used during production can all affect halal status, which is why formal certification matters.
JAKIM vs International Halal Certification
JAKIM (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia) is recognized as one of the world's most rigorous halal certification bodies. A JAKIM certificate covers the entire supply chain — from raw material sourcing through manufacturing, packaging, storage, and distribution. For Malaysian consumers, JAKIM certification provides the highest level of halal assurance.
International certifications also carry weight. Creapure, the pharmaceutical-grade creatine manufactured by AlzChem in Germany, holds independent Halal certification from recognized certifiers as well as Kosher certification. This dual certification reflects the brand's transparency about its production process. Other international bodies like IFANCA (Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America) and ISWA (Islamic Society of Washington Area) also provide legitimate halal certification that JAKIM recognizes.
How to Verify Halal Status Yourself
If a product is not listed in our finder tool, you can verify its halal status through several methods. First, check the JAKIM Halal Portal at halal.gov.my where you can search by product name or company. Second, look for recognized halal logos on the packaging — JAKIM, IFANCA, ISWA, or MUI (Indonesia). Third, request a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) from the manufacturer, which will list all ingredients and their sources. Finally, check if the product uses Creapure-branded creatine, which has established halal certification.
Be cautious of products that simply claim to be halal on their label without backing from a recognized certification body. Self-declared halal status is not the same as independent third-party certification. When in doubt, choosing JAKIM-certified or Creapure-based products eliminates uncertainty entirely.
The Malaysian Context
Malaysia's supplement market has grown significantly, and awareness of halal compliance in sports nutrition is increasing. Local brands like AGYM, PharmaNutri, and N8 have obtained JAKIM certification, making them straightforward choices for Muslim consumers. These brands also tend to be more affordable than imported alternatives, as they avoid the cost overhead of international logistics and import duties.
For those who prefer international brands, Optimum Nutrition's Creapure-based creatine and MyProtein's synthetic creatine are widely available through Shopee, Lazada, and selected Watsons outlets. While they may cost more, they offer recognized quality standards and, in ON's case, formal halal certification through the Creapure supply chain.
